My son, a 3rd grader, struggles with spelling, but loves anything video game realated. We had tried spellingcity.com, but because he doesn’t yet know where all of the letters are on the keyboard, that site wasn’t working as well as I had hoped. Plus, it wasn’t much different than sitting with a word list on the couch and memorizing.

On a whim I searched for a game for his Nintendo DS that would help him study his weekly spelling words. I was so excited to find this game! He’s used it since the day we received it and now studying spelling is not a struggle. He is focused and having fun and he picks up the spelling of the words so much faster than when we were using “traditional” studying methods. No more tears or frustration!

The only issue I have has nothing to do with the game, but with the instructions provided. I had a heck of a time finding where in the game I could input his weekly spelling words and create a custom spelling list. The instructions fail to specify that you need to go to MiniGames first, and then select the Game Options section where you can tap on “Study List” and create a custom word list. If you are in any other portion of the game and go to Game Options, tapping on Study List will not work. Since this is, I am sure, the main reason parents are buying this game, the instructions should have been more clear on how to input a custom word list.

Really, though, I cannot say enough good things about this study tool and have recommended it to his teacher and several friends already.

You know, I can say that purchasing this game, it just seemed a little off kilter and strange. The purpose is to help jazz up your vocabulary and ability to spell. I was pleasantly surprised. The dialog is a little lacking, however for a smaller studio crafting this little spelling gem I was impressed. There is a lot of things to unlock to help customize a look better for you. The controls are easy enough, my only problem is sometimes the voice compression makes it a little hard to understand, headphones were a big help! The mini-games however is really where it is at! They were well thought out that help add a bit more to do rather than spell through the same monotony of words

    What I Liked
    -Easy to navigate
    -Unlock able Treats
    -Nice assortment of mini games
-Decent Graphics for a game about spelling
-Huge assortment of words, learning new ones as you go is great!

    What I did not like

    -Voice Compression
    -Story Mode

    Over all

For 20 bucks, yeah I can dig this, a fun way to learn and a great tool to find new words you never knew about!

I am like the other reviewer…I thought my game was broke until I figured out I could only enter spelling words in minigame mode. But then it has choice of chosing dictionary words or study list in spelling bee mode but it won’t click for study list. It has a button for study list in spelling bee mode but it wouldn’t do anything…. Why do they have the option to do so???? Is anyone else able to use study list words in spelling bee mode? yeah better instructions would be good.
I like you can have 3 users and the games are fun. I wish there were more voices in the game, esp. for my 5 year old. I entered simple words but would be nice if the game would say the word after child spells it too. Mini games are great but Want those study words in the spelling bee mode too. I am glad to find these educational games for ds and hope many more will be avail. soon
